This last Friday was Samuels 1st Doctors appointment. It was the one that every parent dreads, where they hold your baby down and draw blood for their (what I can only assume are sick and twisted) experiments. Because of the nature of the appointment, it falls to me, as the man of the house to go in the room while the baby is tortured in the name of science. Leslie won’t go near. However, I had a problem.
Because I knew that the Ipad 3G was scheduled to come out at the same time as Samuels appointment, and I figured if I wasn’t in line I probably wouldn’t get one in time for our road trip to California. I had a tough decision to make, but really the choice was obvious. Family comes first.
Of course, what I mean by that is that I sent my parents to wait in the line for me. So I was actually hoping that family came first, or at least in time to get an iPad.
And they did.
So now I’m typing this blog on some desert highway in New Mexico, wondering how I ever lived without this “magical and revolutionary” device.
I’m headed to speak at the Pepperdine lectureships. And since my parents wanted to come too, my dad and I decided to head out a day early. Yesterday we got from Fort Worth to El Paso in 10 hours (after preaching 3 weekend services). And I am exhausted. But this time has been really rewarding. I’ve loved getting to spend this much quality time with my dad. He’s one of my heroes and every time we hang out I learn more about him and what it means to be a man. For example…
When we are playing 20 questions, I asked dad if he could eat dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be. I expected his answer to be the usual one, you know, presidents, movie stars, etc.. But that wasn’t his answer. You know who he said?
My mom.
If my dad could eat lunch with anyone alive, it wouldn’t be Nelson Mandela or Tom Cruise, it would be the same person that he’s been eating with for the last five decades.
I also found out that this 3 day trip away from mom (she’s flying into Malibu tomorrow) is the longest dad’s ever been away from mom. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I don’t think that was ever needed for them. Dad still treats mom like she’s his princess, and they’re love story starts again every day.
I asked dad what the secret was to a good marriage and his answer was simple…serve her with everything you’ve got. She is your first ministry and service to God. My dad reminds me lot of John Wooden (without all the national championships). Mainly because of the way he treats and talks about mom. I once heard John Wooden say that the best thing a dad can do for their kids is love their mom. And I think that’s true. There were a lot of things we didn’t have growing up. I never got my dream car when I was in high school, and most of my growing up years were spent in clothes we got at Yard sales.
But the one thing we didn’t have, the thing that I will be eternally grateful for missing out on, was the fear that one day dad might not come home. Growing up, the kids always knew we were important to dad, but we also knew we’d always be second to mom.
And that was perfectly okay with us.
Because after all family comes first.
