Jesus Throws the Best Parties

So today is the beginning of the Richland Hills Church of Christ small groups series, “Jesus Throws the Best Parties.” This has been what I’ve, along with a team of very talented people, been working on for the past month. So all RHCC members, each week we will post a small preview of that night’s video lesson, it will be on the RHCC Facebook Fan page, and the RHCC Twitter account. The idea is to use these clips to help invite your friends to your small group using your social networks. If you are in one of the small groups, feel free to discuss it on here or Facebook. What questions did this raise about the way you view your health? What did you think about James 5:13-16? Did you agree or disagree with the way we talked about it?

If you are from another church and interested in using this series in your church, we will be offering it for sale, complete with group questions (and available in Spanish), later next month.

I’m really looking forward to this, but I have to say I hate some of the camera work. Too close on closeups, and I can’t stand the more distant shots where the speaker is not looking anywhere close to the camera. It makes the speaker appear disinterested, and looks frankly amateurish. I know we have excellent camera people, so I have to assume it’s deliberate. It’s not working for me.

Hey Bro. Danny, well to be fair they didn’t have much to work with. Actually, that’s kind of a newer genre of camera work that’s pretty popular right now. I’m saying that because you are right, they are a top notch team. I’m glad you are in a group, let me know what you think after tonight!

A newer genre of camera work? Really? I never would have guessed that, since it’s in just about every video we shoot and obviously owes its existence to MTV and The Blair Witch Project.

New, old, or just middle-aged, it’s poor.

I liked the content of the video, and the bit at the end with the balloons going free was great. I could see it coming, but loved it anyway. At times, though, it was very hard to hear you speaking over the music. The music was good, just a little louder than the speech at times.

And nobody should ever be filmed with the camera pointing up the nose.

I’m sorry that you had to see up my nose, I hadn’t noticed that shot. No one should be subjected to that, it probably colored the way you saw the rest of the video.

Low angle shots don’t work on closeups. There’s a reason the great filmmakers use the angles they do. They produce the best films.

I actually haven’t seen the video series yet, but I like the sample you gave. More may follow once I see an entire video.

I haven’t been able to get that sermon you taught earlier out of my head. I mean, there were people who were sick and dying, there were poor people, and so on…and here Jesus is, at a wedding party performing his first miracle. Not giving bread to the homeless, not healing the sick, not raising the dead or ending pain — but making fine wine for a wedding party after people had had quite a bit to drink already. To be honest, I’m still not sure exactly what to make of that…it still has me scratching my head. I mean, I know that Jesus was saying that he throws awesome parties — but where were the parties for the lepers and the homeless and the abused and hurting at that moment? Couldn’t he have been there and thrown an awesome party for them? I dunno — I’ve been scratching my head about that ever since you taught that lesson…I’m still struggling…

I really like the point of your video. After watching the vid, I’m forced to agree with Dan a bit — the hospital narrative was awesome, and the close-ups were well done, but something about it made it distracting after about eight-nine minutes — harder to focus on the message, perhaps, because I was distracted by the frequency of the changing camera angles and the intense psychological position of being close-up to someone’s face. Perhaps it was because sometimes you seemed to be talking to me, and sometimes you seemed to be talking to someone else; sometimes I was above you, and sometimes I was looking up at you (which changes my psychological position). This was engaging at first, but after a while I felt some fatigue and it was harder to concentrate on the message. Maybe some far away shots of you that were silent at strategic points would help in letting certain parts of the message sink in — especially if you looked like you were contemplating your own words. Just an idea — I like it, but the format was hard to follow at times. Not trying to be nitpicky — just honest, because I know (from one small filming) that you worked hard on this and want it to be the best it can be for mass production. RB videos often do this — close ups, but also some few far-aways and pauses. The speaker talks directly to you, and the camera angles change a lot less, so it’s easier to focus on what he’s saying…

Anyways, enough about the technicalities — my guess is that it can be annoying to hear about the technicalities when the message is so important…

I agree. I still have questions about suffering…but these are my own doubts. I want to know why God heals some and not others…but that’s God’s deal. Your interpretation of James 5 is something that has me musing…I always wondered what that verse meant, because everyone from the 1st century has died, many of sickness. I’m not sure about the interpretation of the verses, but it’s because I haven’t heard about it. I’m going to have to look into it some more…

It’s helpful to realize that loving God is more important than fighting poverty (although it includes fighting poverty), because someday we’re all going to die.
